Strontian Beavers & Cubs Interactive Science Day

As part of National Science and Engineering Week, 10th Lochaber Scouts—Strontian hosted a very successful and enjoyable Interactive Science and Engineering Fair on Saturday 15th March.

The programme included a balsa wood tower building competition for ages 6-8, 8-11 and 11-16.  Prizes available for each age group. Contact Jamie Tait for details; Science and engineering demonstrations by the Strontian Cubs and AHS staff on subjects that interest them. Topics include; electronic technology and practical computing, civil and building engineering, explosive reactions, probabilities, the theory of relativity, chemistry, human and animal biology and botanical science.

Talks by Lochaline Dive Centre: “An underwater adventure in the Sound of Mull”, and by ADUS “The benefits of high resolution sonar in marine salvage”

Local companies and organisations including Lochaline Quartz Sand, BSW Timber, Soundwood Timber, Marine Harvest Scotland and Lochaber Geoparks, talked about and demonstrating the science and engineering aspects behind their operations

A Science based film programme including ‘The History of Locahline Silica Mine’, and ‘The Story of Ben Nevis’, plus a selection of scientific videos and podcasts from the Royal Institution of Great Britain (Ri Channel).
